With a career of over 20 years spanning clinical practice, research, and university teaching, Dr. Bonnie Lee brings unique and integrated experience to her work with couples and individuals impacted by relationship disconnection, trauma, and addiction.

Her approach helps clients move beyond symptoms to understand their intergenerational history, emotional needs, and relationship injuries, supporting the development of new communication patterns and new ways of viewing themselves and one another.

Sensitive to clients’ cultural and religious backgrounds, she creates a safe therapeutic space where clients can find their voice while remaining open to other perspectives. By reconnecting with their essential qualities, strengths, and values, clients often find renewed vitality and internal resources for living.

Experience

At the Calgary Couples Counselling Centre, Dr. Lee serves as a Senior Adjunct Therapist. This role reflects her depth of experience and her contribution beyond direct client care, including supporting the clinic’s therapeutic culture and strengthening couples therapy expertise within the team.

Dr. Lee is the developer of Congruence Couple Therapy, an evidence-based model designed to help couples heal when addiction, compulsive behaviours, mental health symptoms, and chronic stress have disrupted trust, emotional safety, and relational functioning. This model was recognized as a Distinguished Initiative by the Health Quality Council of Alberta.

She is also an experienced clinical supervisor, trainer, and internationally invited speaker, with leadership roles in the Canadian Association for Couple and Family Therapy (CACFT). CACFT recognized her outstanding research and contributions to the field with the Professional Contribution Award in 2025.

Education and Credentials

Dr. Lee holds a PhD and multiple graduate degrees spanning social work, pastoral counselling, religious studies (anthropology and psychology of religion), and speech pathology, with advanced training from the University of Ottawa, the University of Calgary, St. Paul University (Ottawa), and the University of Virginia. She is also a recipient of prestigious postdoctoral fellowship awards, including the CIHR-CHSRF Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.
