Lara Akinpelu

MS, Registered Provisional Psychologist

Lara is a Registered Provisional Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists. She holds a Masters in General Psychology from Walden University, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. She has completed all core required courses in counseling psychology to become provisionally registered here in Alberta. She recently completed her minimum 1600 supervision hours.

Lara is passionate about working with couples and believes building a healthy relationship between couples steers the ship towards raising emotionally stable children and a healthy family which is a foundation of every society. In her quest for more knowledge in couple’s counseling, Lara completed level 1 and level 2 of Gottman’s couples therapy training. She has also completed training in Beck’s Cognitive Behavior Therapy on depression and suicide prevention.

Approach

Lara's approach is collaborative and flexible, grounded in the belief that we are what we think we are. Lara draws from Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Cognitive Therapy to best meet client’s needs.

Lara has worked as a Christian counsellor in West Africa. She has also volunteered with students with autism and ADHD in a special needs school in South- East Asia. As a staff clinician in a private Mental health Institution in Calgary, Lara worked on diverse cases in a wide population.

Lara has worked to dispel the stigma and negative perception held within the ethnic minority group about mental health. She is committed to creating more mental health awareness and counseling support to individuals and couples within the ethnic minority group.

She focuses on helping clients identify, challenge and change cognitive distortions and associated behaviors to improve emotional regulation and develop coping skills and strategies to solve or minimize existing challenges. Her goal is to instill hope and efficacy in clients by guiding clients to create realistic and achievable goals relevant to their needs.

Lara’s life journey has afforded her gifts of hope, kindness, empathy, compassion, understanding and deep care for others. She views reaching out for help as a sign of strength and courage. By asking for help, you are giving yourself the chance to receive the support you deserve, to become a better you. She is here to offer support in a safe, non-judgemental space where you can explore and discover new things about yourself.

In addition to emerging adults and adults, Lara enjoys working with children ages 6+ and teens. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, baking, spending time with her family and friends, and traveling.
