Experience

My approach is eclectic, using principles established by John Gottman's method of couples therapy, as well as concepts from attachment theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, and solution-focused therapy.

Russell Millington is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists who has been affiliated with the Calgary Couples Counselling Centre (formerly Cobb & Associates) since 2011. With over ten years of clinical experience, Russ has worked with many people presenting with various difficulties and struggles, including relationship issues, chemical dependence and mental health concerns.

Russ has over five years experience helping couples build greater emotional connection and friendship, communicate with each other more authentically and assertively, establish common ground, work through conflicts and feelings of anger, learn to regulate their emotions through relaxation and deep breathing, increase trust, and establish healthy boundaries.

Russ has received training in Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy and Gottman Method Couples therapy.
Russ’ clients have described him as warm, empathetic and understanding. He believes that instilling hope is one of the most important elements of successful therapy. As clients start to feel better and gain confidence they come to see that change is possible through altering patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. Many of these changes start with small shifts — baby steps — in thinking and attitude. He is influenced by humanistic models and theories including Person-Centered Therapy (Carl Rogers), Solution-Focused Therapy (Berg), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Aaron Beck).
