Ryan James


Ryan is a seasoned counsellor with over 15 years of dedicated experience. He is a Certified Canadian Counsellor from the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CPCA), he also contributes his expertise as a part-time faculty member at the City University of Seattle (Calgary Campus). Recognized as a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), Ryan serves as an Approved Clinical Supervisor, providing valuable guidance to both counsellors-in-training and his fellow professionals.


Armed with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Lethbridge and a Master of Education in Counselling (MEd) from the University of Northern British Columbia, Ryan brings a rich educational background to his practice.

Ryan’s extensive experience encompasses working with both couples and individuals, addressing a spectrum of issues, including relational challenges with communication, mistrust and lack of connection; anxiety; fear; depression; and addictive or dependency behaviors.

Ryan specializes in cultivating strong relationships for couples by emphasizing effective communication, genuine connection, and openness. Recognizing that numerous challenges stem from communication hurdles, Ryan collaborates with couples to establish fresh patterns of connection, facilitating more fluid communication. By focusing on in-session skill development and fostering understanding, Ryan guides both partners in overcoming challenges. Employing diverse methods, with a primary emphasis on the Gottman approach, Ryan strives collaboratively to foster tangible change and help couples forge a renewed relationship.

In his client-centered approach, Ryan meets individuals where they currently are, offering unwavering support in navigating life’s challenges while empowering them to recognize their innate strengths. He facilitates the acquisition of new skills and encourages the practice of healthy responses to difficulties, extending beyond sessions to aid clients in future moments of need.

Employing a versatile blend of counselling methods, Ryan adopts a holistic approach to provide meaningful support to his clients. Drawing from methodologies such as Gottman Level II, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (MiCBT), and Person-Centered Therapy, he tailors his interventions to meet the unique needs of each individual or couple he works with. Ryan’s commitment to fostering positive change and promoting mental well-being shines through his dedicated and comprehensive counselling approach.
